With HAEVIC’s roots firmly embedded in all aspects of drone aviation - most notably as the sole providers of highly specialised training in South Africa, together Dr Gerhard Coetzee and Louis Nel have branched out and taken the possibilities surrounding the RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aerial Systems) to new exciting levels.
With technology rapidly changing on a day-to-day basis, HAEVIC has recognized the capabilities of the “eye in the sky”.
Farmers have found new, more effective ways of monitoring their perimeter fences and reservoirs, photographers can get landscape shots without hiring helicopters, mining companies now have access to high-resolution 3D maps of their mines and on a amateur front, the weekend hobbyist has something to brag about on a Monday morning.
The name "Haevic" is derived from a German word meaning "Hawk".
Haevic uses Remotely Piloted Aerial Systems (better known as "drones") to scrutinise your world from the air. Seeing the reality from a distance allows you to see the bigger picture of what is really happening in your working environment.
Using specialised camera equipment on HAEVIC’s drones, we will provide you with additional and trivial data images. These data images will assist you to understand the deeper significance of what is really happening in your world.
HAEVIC’s multispectral images will reveal where your crop is suffering due to disease, water stress or adverse soil conditions. HAEVIC’s multispectral images will reveal where you need to adapt the rate of fertilizer applications within specific areas. HAEVIC’s Remotely Piloted Aerial Systems (RPAS) will allow you to access difficult-to-reach areas on your farm within a matter of minutes.
Alternatively, use HAEVIC’s surveying services to draw your own aerial maps on a regular base to determine tendencies on your farming area over time. Create your own 3D images or determine the flow of water in certain areas in order to predict the best location for building your dams.
Count the total of your exotic game herd within minutes by flying over your farm with your RPAS using HAEVIC’s unique RFID tag system. Using this data, you will be able to improve your business strategies in the most profitable way, outdoing your competition on a consistent basis.
Dr Coetzee has extensive knowledge in creating and presenting skills outcomes-based training. Dr Coetzee became interested in the RPAS industry in 2014. Acknowledging the vast possibilities for the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles in South Africa, Dr Coetzee himself became a proficient HAEVIC RPAS operator.
He then used the opportunity to develop several professional HAEVIC RPAS training courses. These courses have proven themselves to be highly sought after especially in the farming environment.
Dr Coetzee is currently part of the CUAASA Workshop focusing on training programmes which will adhere to the newly proposed CAA legislation in South Africa.
Louis's Career started off after he has received a bursary from one of the Denel affiliates to study electronic engineering, often referred to as "light current" engineering. Earning an impressive second place at a science expo where his very own rocket launcher was on display, played a huge role in securing his bursary after school. After completion of his studies and bursary commitments within the Denel group, Louis moved on to further his education in the UK where he completed an Honours degree in Information Technology with his focus on Artificial intelligence, intelligent machines and digital communications.
Louis has since been involved in several systems integration projects guiding them through the full life cycle, from inception to launch. The integration of methodologies such as digital communication, communications networks, electrical and electronics together with physical structures was used to create intelligent systems such as the Freeway Management system in the Western Cape.
As an engineer with an extensive background, Louis is currently busy with the development of specialised HAEVIC RPAS products in the agricultural and mining business sectors.
HAEVIC - WHAT WE DO
HAEVIC - FARMER'S RIGHT HAND
In what can be regarded as yet another addition to Precision Farming's arsenal, HAEVIC has joined forces with agricultural giants TRIOMF in taking accuracy to new realms of discovery!
Armed with an infra-red camera, a built-in GPS and accompanying software, HAEVIC’s flying robot as it is often referred to, adds a whole new dimension not only to the farmer's ability to identify, monitor and rectify crop health but also the following:
- Creating infrared maps
- Stitching photos on Google Earth
- Inspecting fields in hard to reach places
- Detecting criminals with Thermal cameras during the night
- Counting livestock with the unique RFID tag system within minutes
- Detecting pathogens on infected crops long before the symptoms are noticeable by installing a Nano sensor on the UAV
By guiding the farmer on which HAEVIC RPAS application will be best, taking circumstances and budget into account, the advantages are endless such as:
- Saving money
- Making use of clean energy – no petrol
- Managing criminal activities effectively
- Monitoring livestock efficiently and quickly
- And lastly, making Precision Farming easier to execute
HAEVIC - PROTECTING LIVESTOCK
Although not as cost-effective as rhino and other endangered species, the development of RFID technology in cattle is currently in progress.
HAEVIC’s RFID system will help with the tracking of animals and their whereabouts as they cross farm boundaries and will help equip the farmer with the knowledge to implement effective management as well as enhancing the security of his livestock. Thermal cameras can further aid the farmer due to the stationary nature of animals at night.
Until the RFID cattle tags become more cost-effective, there are still many advantages in only using a HAEVIC drone, the biggest being the on board camera which allows the farmer to basically monitor the farm's entire livelihood in the form of pest, livestock and irrigation control.
HAEVIC - A GEM OF AN IDEA
The primary use of HAEVIC aircraft within the mining industry is for exploration which includes the mapping of distant terrain and to further examine potential mineral deposits. The nature of such missions make the use of HAEVIC RPAS a natural fit as well as being cost-effective and having a relatively low environmental footprint which is currently a top priority for the industry. HAEVIC has upped the usefulness of the RPAS to mining by providing the following services:
- Photo & video capturing
- Infra-red surveillance and mapping
- Distance Sensing by means of nano-sensors for the purpose of gas analysis
- Flying over hard to reach areas to conduct close-up inspections
HAEVIC - CREATE YOUR OWN MAPS
The use of HAEVIC RPAS or drones allows for the surveillance of big spaces from a privileged perspective, offers excellent mobility and a more ecological option, and acts as a brilliant airborne data capturing solution.
Further adding to HAEVIC’s appeal, specifically keeping the mining industry in mind, HAEVIC provides several benefits across the value chain from safety and security (search & rescue, monitoring / providing information from dangerous and difficult locations) to exploration and development (such as aerial photography and remote sensing) and productivity (stockpile mapping, mine mapping & reconciliation) to name just a few.
HAEVIC’s also has the ability to take high-resolution time lapse pictures of a site to see if the fractures have appeared in the rock faces over time for early detection so that is removes much of the risk and increases safety on site.
Through HAEVIC’s extensive array of innovative services and products available as well as HAEVIC’s years of experience coupled with expertise, HAEVIC has underlined its status as one of the country's top drone aviation establishments and will continue to push the boundaries moving forward.
HAEVIC - DRONES AND THERMAL IMAGING
At Haevic we are constantly developing new technologies which not only offer new exciting possibilities, but also plenty of additional advantages.
One such discovery is FPV (first person view) flying at night via thermal imaging cameras. What makes this so appealing is that detection at night has become a whole lot easier and this device can now be your trump card when it comes to security and game counting.
Once mounted, no one is to know it’s even around! Not only is the HAEVIC drone not visible at night, it also can’t be heard at the height it flies so for example, heat emanating from a crack in a chimney wall can be picked up making maintenance and repair work possible.
HAEVIC Drones can also be used to detect humans in fire emergencies as well as in poor visibility conditions like mist, making it the perfect instrument in the trickiest of situations.
HAEVIC - TAKING FLIGHT
HAEVIC Drones are turning the mining sector into an emerging frontier for new technology through the ability to monitor stockpiles, map exploration targets and track equipment, opening up a wide range of possibilities.
The lack of regulatory guidance and standards has by far been the biggest barrier to routine RPAS flight missions but this will soon be a thing of the past when the regulations are finalised and expected to be set out by March next year.
As members of The South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA), HAEVIC looks forward and remains committed to adhering to the regulations which according to Coetzee won’t be set in stone as the legal process continues to pan out.
HAEVIC - HELPING THE RHINO
With the rhino crises spiralling out of control in South Africa – it is projected that if the killing continues at the current rate, we could see rhino deaths overtaking births by 2016 – HAEVIC has jumped on board in promoting rhino conservation.
HAEVIC Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) has been developed - technology which involves the placement of a small tag in the stub that remains from the rhino’s horn after the de-horning process which occurs every two years.
A farmer is now able to fly his drone over his farm during which a signal is sent and picked up by the drone, identifying the animal. HAEVIC has since completed the first stage of tests and are currently busy finalising the accompanying software package. By helping improve the security of these precious animals, HAEVIC is certainly doing its bit in the fight against poaching.
HAEVIC - RISING TO THE CHALLENGE
From the 1st of July 2015 RPAS operators may register themselves as legal operators of their Unmanned Aerial Vehicles.
As a pioneer in the South African RPAS industry, HAEVIC followed suit. Since July last year HAEVIC’s pilots obtained their RPA licenses from the South African Civil Aviation Authority. In adittion all of HAEVIC’s RPAS’ received their registration marks, allowing HAEVIC to legally fly their drones anywhere in South Africa.
In addition HAEVIC recently also received its Air Service License from the Department of Transport after a rigorous application process. This all means that HAEVIC can now render its service on a world class quality level while maintaining the highest standards of safety in all circumstances!

HAEVIC - THE DARTDRONE
HAEVIC - RESILIENCE DURING DAUNTING WORKING CONDITIONS.
The HAEVIC DartGun - Welcome to the latest product developed by HAEVIC, the leading drone developer in South Africa.
Aptly named the HAEVIC DartGun, this robust platform already proved its resilience during daunting working conditions the past two years in DRC agricultural operations. Now HAEVIC crossed the boundary combining the HAEVIC SuperDrone with a unique pneumatic, all aluminum, light weight gun-attached to a potent airframe.
HAEVIC - DEVELOPED BY PROFESSIONALS
Developed in tandem with one of the leading gun manufacturers in South Africa, the HAEVIC DartGun was designed by a team of professionals to meet the requirements of the game industry and veterinarians alike.
With it’s heavy lift 960mm diameter carbon fiber frame and 17 inch propellers, the HAEVIC DartGun is able to lift a payload of up to 10kg. Attaching a light weight air gun to the HAEVIC SuperDrone makes this machine a remarkable nimble but fast flying performer. Able to reach a top air speed of 67km/h the pilot can follow the target during flight by means of his special live-view goggles. Using clean LiPo battery-driven motors the HAEVIC DartGun provides silent yet long endurance flying times of up to 40 minutes per operation.
HAEVIC - UNIQUE LASER GUIDED VISION
Aligned with a built-in laser beam, the pilot can view the target through the on-board HD camera during flight. Pointing the laser beam on the target, the dart will find the exact spot indicated by the laser beam. Ground-breaking in the drone industry, the pilot’s goggles are linked to the movement of the HAEVIC DartGun. When the pilot moves his head up and down, the gimbal-mounted HAEVIC DartGun will follow suit and aim the gun accordingly.
HAEVIC - SAFE OPERATION
As the HAEVIC DartGun is “loaded” by pressurised air prior to the operation, the HAEVIC DartGun can be safely initialised even by a novice. By increasing the pressure of air in the gun, the velocity and reach of the dart’s impact can be altered. Using the recommended air pressure the HAEVIC DartGun will be accurate up to 30 metres.
HAEVIC - AFFORDABLE AND ACCESSIBLE
For the first time the HAEVIC DartGun provides an affordable platform for the game farmer, game capture industry and veterinarians alike. At a fraction of the cost compared to the traditional helicopter platform, the HAEVIC DartGun now opens up brand new possibilities for both the farming and veterinary communities.

HAEVIC - MAVIC
The HAEVIC DJI Mavic Pro is a small yet powerful drone that turns the sky into your creative canvas easily and without worry, helping you make every moment an aerial moment. Its compact size hides a high degree of complexity that makes it one of DJI’s most sophisticated flying cameras ever. 24 high-performance computing cores, an all-new transmission system with a 4.3mi (7km)* range,5 vision sensors, and a 4K camera stabilized by a 3-axis mechanical gimbal, are at your command with just a push of your thumb or a tap of your finger.
*Unobstructed, free of interference, when FCC compliant.
HAEVIC - MULTI-ROTORS
One of the first decisions to make when purchasing an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle is what configuration will suit your requirements.
Several configurations are available when considering to purchase a HAEVIC multi-propelled copter type of drone.
HAEVIC - THE EXTRA MOTORS AND PROPELLERS OFFER REDUNDANCY AND SECURITY
There is nothing worse than seeing your craft, gimbal and camera shattered into a million pieces so with an HAEVIC octocopter, it is much cheaper to replace a motor as compared to an entire quadcopter when a motor fails.
HAEVIC - SAFETY
Flying without a redundant motor is not only a hazard to your equipment, but also to others so being able to recover from a malfunctioning motor is important.
HAEVIC - FLY WITH MORE
HAEVIC Octocopters can lift more weight. More motors mean more thrust and more thrust means more weight which allow you to fly with more cameras and lenses.
HAEVIC - HEXACOPTERS
The BBC famously made their hexacopter debut in October last year which allowed them to film locations and angles that previously would not have been possible when they published a story on what a high-speed rail line through the UK would do for the country.
This is a fine example of how these little machines have transformed the world of news and the lives of news reporters across the world by being able to provide a brandnew perspective.
Equipped with GPS and having a flight time of approximately 30 minutes, the German-built device also comes with wireless communication and camera mounting.
Essentially these models have all of the same major benefits of a quadcopter with a lot more thrown in like power, height and added safety (flight is still possible even if one motor is damaged).
HAEVIC - QUADCOPTERS
By far the most popular of the HAEVIC multicopters. They are fast, easy to manufacture and affordable.
HAEVIC’s Quadcopter designs have also become increasingly popular in UAV research with their electronic control systems and sensors used to stabilize their aircraft. With their small size and agility, HAEVIC quadcopters can be flown indoors as well as outdoors and also have additional advantages:
HAEVIC Quadcopters do not require mechanical linkages to vary the rotor blade pitch angle as they spin which simplifies design and maintenance of the vehicle.
The use of four rotors allows each individual rotor to have a smaller diameter than the equivalent helicopter rotor, allowing them to possess less kinetic energy during flight which reduces the damage caused should the rotors hit anything.
For small-scale UAVs, this makes the vehicle safer for close interaction. Due to their ease of construction and control, quadcopter aircraft are frequently used as amateur model aircraft projects.
HAEVIC - KEEP THIS IN MIND WHEN MAKING THE CHOICE:
QUAD: These models are inexpensive and less durable. Perfect for beginners and non-professionals.
HEXA: The ideal choice for semi-professionals or hobbyists that want a very durable, steady-flying copter that can carry heavier weights.
OCTO: The top of the line. These are copters that have a high price tag, but they are powerful, stable and fast. Advanced functionality and stabilization features make an octocopter a must-have for professionals.
As the prices of HAEVIC hexacopters and HAEVIC octocopters drop, you may find models within your price range. If you do, these are the preferred choice over a quadcopter.
HAEVIC - PHANTOM 4 PRO
An uprated camera is equipped with a 1-inch 20-megapixel sensor capable of shooting 4K/60fps video and Burst Mode stills at 14 fps. The adoption of titanium alloy and magnesium alloy construction increases the rigidity of the airframe and reduces weight, making the Phantom 4 Pro similar in weight to the HAEVIC Phantom 4. The Flight Autonomy system adds dual rear vision sensors and infrared sensing systems for a total of 5-direction of obstacle sensing and 4-direction of obstacle avoidance.
HAEVIC - CAMERA WITH 1-INCH 20MP SENSOR
The on-board camera has been redesigned to use a 1-inch 20-megapixel CMOS sensor. A custom engineered lens made up of eight elements is arranged in seven groups, it is the first DJI camera to use a mechanical shutter, eliminating rolling shutter distortion which can occur when taking images of fast moving subjects or when flying at high speed. In effect, it is as powerful as many traditional ground cameras. More powerful video processing supports H.264 4K videos at 60fps or H.265 4K at 30fps, both with a 100Mbps bitrate. Advanced sensors and processors ensure everything is captured with more image detail and the image data needed for advanced post-production.
The Phantom 4 Pro camera system has been significantly upgraded from the Phantom 4, improving every part of the camera including, sensor size, resolution, image processing system, and more, making it the most powerful Phantom camera ever.
HAEVIC - PRODUCTION OPTIMIZED 4K
An enhanced video processing system allows video to be captured in cinema and production optimized DCI 4K/60 (4096 x 2160/60fps) at a bitrate of 100Mbps, enabling you to get high-resolution slow motion shots. The Phantom 4 Pro also supports the H.265 video codec (Maximum resolution4096X2160/30fps). For a, given bitrate, H.265 doubles the amount of image processing as H.264, resulting in significantly enhanced image quality. Record in the high dynamic range D-log mode to make the most of this image data for colour grading.
HAEVIC - 1-INCH 20-MEGAPIXEL CMOS
Sensor size is more important to image quality than the number of pixels because a larger sensor captures more information in every pixel, improving dynamic range, signal-to-noise ratio, and low light performance. The 1-inch 20-megapixel CMOS sensor in the Phantom 4 Pro is almost four times the size of the Phantom 4's 1/2.3in sensor. It uses larger pixels and has a maximum ISO of 12800 as well as increased contrast. It is good enough for images to be used immediately, while also capturing enough detail for advanced post-processing.
HAEVIC - HIGH RESOLUTION LENS
The resolution and contrast of a lens is critical to image quality, because only a quality lens can capture sharp, vivid photos at high resolutions. The brand-new Phantom 4 Pro camera has an aerial optimized F2.8 wide-angle lens with a 24mm equivalent focal length. It features eight elements – 2aspherical – arranged in seven groups that fit into a smaller, more compact frame. Its images are consistently detailed with low distortion and low dispersion, ensuring that photos and videos are sharp and vivid. For the first time, ever with a DJI camera, MTF (Modulation Transfer Function) results have been made public, so people can get a better understanding of lens performance.
* An MTF chart is used to measure the ability of a lens to reproduce contrast and resolve details. Low spatial frequencies reflect overall contrast, and high spatial frequencies reflect detail resolution. Both are measured in lp/mm. Image Height indicates the distance of a given point on the lens from the centre of the sensor. MTF 100% indicates perfect performance.
HAEVIC - CAPTURE EVERY MOMENT
Aerial imaging is not only used to capture landscapes; it brings new perspectives to everything from action scenes to motor racing. Capturing objects moving at high speed has always been a challenge for flying cameras using an electronic shutter. Therefore, the Phantom 4 Pro is the first DJI Phantom to use a mechanical shutter and a large-aperture prime lens. A mechanical shutter with a max speed of 1/2000s eliminates rolling shutter distortion which can occur when taking images of fast moving subjects or when flying at high speed. The electronic shutter has also been improved with a max shutter speed of 1/8000seconds, and a new Burst Mode shoot capable of shooting 14 fps at 20 megapixels to catch the perfect moment.
HAEVIC - 5-DIRECTION OF OBSTACLE SENSING
Flight Autonomy is expanded with an additional set of high-resolution stereo vision sensors placed at the rear in addition to the pair placed at the front as well as infrared sensing systems placed on the left and right sides. This network creates a total of 5-direction of obstacle sensing and 4-direction of obstacle avoidance, protecting the Phantom 4 Pro from more obstacles and giving filmmakers the confidence to capture more complex images.
HAEVIC - 6-CAMERA NAVIGATION SYSTEM
Three sets of dual vision sensors form a 6-camera navigation system that works constantly to calculate the relative speed and distance between the aircraft and an object. Using this network of forward, rearward and downward vision sensors, the Phantom 4 Pro can hover precisely in places without GPS when taking off indoors, or on balconies, or even when flying through windows with minimal pilot control. In the unlikely event that front and downward sensors are unable to operate, the aircraft can still hover in place using the rear stereo vision system. The Phantom 4 Pro also can fly in complex environments at a flight speed of up to 31mph (50kph) while avoiding obstacles in its path. In Narrow Sensing Mode, the Phantom 4Pro narrows its sensing scope enabling it to see in more detail and fly through small spaces.
HAEVIC - WHAT IS FLIGHTAUTONOMY
Flight Autonomy is an advanced aerial intelligence and flight automation platform. It is made up of a complex network of ten component groups including seven cameras — forward, rearward and downward dual vision sensors and the primary camera — an infrared sensing system, dual-band satellite positioning (GPS and GLONASS), two downward facing ultrasonic rangefinders, redundant IMUs and compasses, and a group of powerful, specialized computing cores. The Phantom 4 Pro acquires a real-time view of its environment and information about the height and position of nearby obstacles to create a 3D map it can locate itself within. The IMU and compasses collect crucial flight status, speed and direction data, while redundant IMUs and compasses monitor critical data and rule out possible errors, dramatically enhancing the reliability of flight.
HAEVIC - INFRARED SENSING SYSTEM
The Phantom 4 Pro is the first DJI aircraft to use an infrared sensing system. Placed on the left, and right sides of the aircraft, these measure the distance between the aircraft and any obstacles using infrared 3D scanning. When in Beginner Mode and Tripod Mode, these sensors have a horizontal field of view of 70° and a vertical field of view of 20°, providing a wide view of the scene to the sides of the Phantom, and a maximum range of 23ft (7m). Traditional ultrasonic sensors only have a detection range of 3-5m and may be confused when affected by propeller vibration. The infrared sensing system can sense larger areas and measure the distance between the aircraft, identifying the closest objects accurately while avoiding interference, providing more reliable sensing and protection.
HAEVIC - NEW LIGHTBRIDGE VIDEO TRANSMISSION SYSTEM
The Phantom 4 Pro controller integrates an upgraded Lightbridge HD video transmission system that adds 5.8 GHz transmission support. The ability to choose between2.4GHz and 5.8GHz allows pilots to cut through interference and eliminates image lag caused when flying in an area with extensive 2.4GHz frequency use. Normally, Wi-Fi video transmission systems use a 2.4GHz frequency to work with a controller using a 5.8GHz frequency as this prevents interference that can occur when both use the same frequency. If using the same frequency, the video transmission system and the remote controller will interfere with each other, causing image lag.
The Lightbridge HD video transmission system used in the Phantom 4 Pro uses TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) to transmit signals, allowing it to send controller signals and receive video transmission signals at the same frequency. When switched on, the Phantom 4 Pro evaluates local signal levels, automatically choosing the transmission frequency with the lowest level of interference. This ensures the optimum range of a maximum video transmission of 4.3mi (7km)*.

HAEVIC - VERY SMALL APERTURE TERMINAL:
Private networks for corporates with sites in remote areas in Africa are made possible through VSAT and can be implemented within days, offering an exceptional competitive advantage.
VSAT stands for "Very Small Aperture Terminal", which refers to the technology whereby data is sent and received via an antenna. The antenna size is typically 1.2m diameter for Ku-Band, or 2.4m diameter for C-Band. The difference between the two is the frequency in which they operate. C-Band systems operate within a lower frequency band (3-6 Ghz) and are therefore less affected by rain fade. However due to the size of the hardware they are more costly.
Ku Band systems operate on a higher Frequency (12-14 Ghz), and allow for smaller antennas, but depending on the power of the satellite can be affected by bad weather conditions.
